We hope everyone is doing well!

We recently wrapped up our annual summer camp here at the Happy Day Services building. A heartfelt thank‑you to all the campers, families, and the Akron Rotary team for making this a wonderful yearly tradition. We’re already looking forward to next year!

We also want to thank everyone who participated in or volunteered at the annual golf outing on July 29th. This event is the sole fundraiser for People for Portage DD, the levy committee for Portage DD. Thank you!

Lastly, we’d like to provide an update regarding our financial concerns. Over the past three years, we have seen a significant increase in waiver costs. Unfortunately, there are currently no signs that these costs will decrease. This year alone, our waiver expenses rose by more than one million dollars, following an increase of four million dollars over the previous two years—a total increase of five million dollars in just three years. In response, we have reduced or discontinued some programs and have strategically chosen not to fill several positions that became vacant due to retirement or resignation—four positions so far in 2026. We are doing everything we can to preserve the programs and services that are vital to those we serve.

There are potential changes being discussed, but no confirmed solutions yet that would address the rising waiver costs. These conversations are ongoing and will require collaboration among legislators, County Boards of DD, and the State of Ohio to create a more sustainable system. All 88 counties in Ohio are experiencing similar challenges, so we are not alone. Our system may look different in the future, and we will keep everyone updated as new developments arise.

We will continue working together to find ways to preserve essential services. We deeply appreciate the trust and support our community has shown to Portage DD. We remain committed to being responsible stewards of the levy funds entrusted to us by the residents of Portage County. Thank you for your continued support.
