DSP-U is nationally recognized, and in Ohio, it’s accredited by the state’s Department of Education and may serve as an alternative pathway to high school graduation, substituting for traditional testing requirements (subject to current graduation requirements). alongside the student.

Typically, Direct Support Professionals need to be 18 and have a high school diploma or GED. There are also
positions that are available with modified responsibilities for high school students (Direct Support Aid). Job placement assistance is offered for both roles. There will not be personal care duties, or medication duties with the internship or Direct Support Aid role. Both roles require that another staff person over the age of 18 is working at the same time, alongside the student.

Students are able to make up a limited number of classes online in the event of emergencies or planned absences.

No! Portage DD and/or grant funds cover 100% of the costs of the program. There are no fees, and your certification never expires.

No. DSP-U students and Direct Support Aids are not involved with personal care (no bathing, toileting, etc), and do not pass medications. Students will always be working alongside an experienced staff person who is over 18.
When you become a full DSP, personal care may be one of your job responsibilities.
